Bernd Krauß

30.6.-16.9.2012

Opening Fri 29th June 2012, 7 pm

Bernd Krauß, Chanel

The exhibition is the first institutional solo show of the Stockholm based artist in Germany in more than 15 years. It is impossible to distinctly categorize Bernd Krauss’ work due to his use of such manifold forms and materials as painting, sculpture, performance, theatre and dance performances, various printing techniques, photography, video and a self produced magazine (“Der Riecher”) as well as an imaginary television channel. His projects are almost exclusively situational and deal with contradictions and potentials of their respective surroundings. Bernd Krauss is no expert professional who refines a specific technique over the years. Nowhere does he linger for too long so as not to get caught up in professional constraints. Rather, his approach resembles that of a radical hobbyist who attains innovation because existing agreements do not necessarily make sense to him. That makes him a practitioner who constantly re-negotiates the conditions of practice. Jacques Rancière would say that Krauss sets the principle of politics against the principle of police.

In his shows different methods and media densify to result in polyglot and multi-formatted installations. Simultaneously they function as a background for various actions, activities, performances and events. These scenarios and self-created surroundings offer specific planes and wide scopes of projection to the relationships to one’s self, to one’s practice and to the audience, which continuously alter and challenge the meaning of the exhibition space.
